fabric /ˈfæbrık/ n. 1. a cloth made by weaving, knitting or felting fibres.
story /ˈstɔri/ n. 1. a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest or amuse the hearer or reader; a tale.
Definitions from Macquarie Essential Dictionary, Macquarie Library, 2000
Fabric is part of the everyday. It is touched, worn, sucked, ripped, washed, ironed, hung out to dry. We lovingly caress the garments and items made from it. We wrap ourselves in them, adorn them, cherish them, despise them, reinvent them, discard them. We are comforted, reassured and reminded by them. They are special, unique and ordinary. Externally they describe who we are, where we've been and what we've been doing. Ultimately, each piece tells a story, without words, without sound - rich histories heavy with memory. It is the stories we describe however, that express our inner thoughts and feelings, show who we are and how we see and approach the world.
As the project gets underway you'll find a few participants' fabric items and their stories on this page.
